Austrian special coaches for EC titles

The Coaching team for the 2. FIR European Championships is now complete. For the first time in history the Racketlon Federation Austria will have a special coach for each sport. Thanks to the personal contacts of RFA president Marcel Weigl team captain Thomas Wagner will be supported by special coaches this year. “Our goals are clearly defined with European Championship titles”, says Weigl. The Austrian national teams elite and U21 will prepare with Mario Gruber (Tabletennis), Andras Nemeth (Badminton), Edi Stepanek (Squash) and Max Wagner (Tennis). We would like to introduce them:

Table tennis:

Mario Gruber was member of the U18 table tennis national team and represented Austria at European Youth Championships. He is an experienced Bundesliga player. Among his titles is a county championship title as well as a 9th place at the national table tennis championshops. The 37-year-old was part of the Austrian team that took the Racketlon World Championship title in 2010. As coach he recently led the table tennis team of Oberndorf into the final of the 2. Austrian Bundesliga as well as helped some youngsters to Austrian championship titles. In Racketlon it is his first station as coach.

Badminton:

Andras Nemeth (credit: photing.com) was 15 times Hungarian Youth Champion and took six national titles in Hungary. In 2016 he won the bronze medal at the Austrian National Badminton Championships. As state certified coach the 25-year-old is active as playing-captain for the Union Racketlon Klosterneuburg as well as AS Logistik Mödling in the Austrian Bundesliga. In Racketlon he led the U21 national team to two World Championship and one European Championship title.

Squash:

Edi Stepanek was Austrian national champion in 1981, won seven county titles as well as four national team titles. The state certified 64-year old coach holds the highest squash coaching license in Austria (ESF 1 & 2) and has coached the Austrian national team elite and youth for many years, as well as the Spanish junior national team for the last few years. He is also a Racketlon newcomer.

Tennis:

Max Wagner was tennis team champion u18 in Bavaria and played in the highest county league there. As Coach with the German DTB B Licence the 29 year old led some juniors to national Bavarian titles. Since one year he is working for the Tennis College at the City & Country Club in Vienna, the venue of the European Championships.

Canadians dominating in Massachusetts

Last weekend (29th & 30th April), over 25 participants gathered for the first ever International Racketlon Federation sanctioned tournament to be played in the USA. The tournament was open to all with draws for first timers, amateurs and elite players. The elite draw attracted some exceptional talent, including current world #9, Marko Välimäki as well the top two Canadian players, Patrick Laplante and Jeremy Easterbrook. The Canadians dominated, with Patrick taking the title and Jeremy the runner up spot. Top seeded Marko (credit: tournament director) put up a strong performance despite nursing an obvious injury, but the Canadians showed that they can compete with the top European talent!. Time To Make Some English Open History

The English Open is one of the most historic tournaments in Racketlon and it is back in 2017 for its 14th running.  Over the years it has been won by all the greats of our sport, Eliasson, Kubanova, Lawrence, Ratzer and Reid to name just a few.  For the 2017 edition we are guaranteed a new winner in the ladies event while in the men’s event, just Duncan Stahl (the defending champion) and Michi Dickert (2009) have tasted English Open glory before.  Although entry is slightly lower than we would have hoped, the players who have entered and the resulting draws will make for an excellent event at the only Olympic quality Racketlon facilities in the world at the Redbridge Sports Centre.  After another great UK Racketlon live event for the elite draws (re-watch it here) UK Racketlon will also be Live Blogging throughout here, so everyone will be able to keep in touch with the event throughout.
All draws can be found now on fir.tournamentsoftware.com Continue reading
