“Grand Slam” for Ratzer?

The whole Racketlon family is excited about the 15th Single World Championships held in Fürth, Germany on Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th of November. Like always players from all over the world will fight for the titles. All draws with 382 entries from 29 different countries are online on fir.tournamentsoftware.com and a livestream on Facebook will give all the fans at home the chance to follow the matches.

Men A

Tournament favourite is of course world number 1 Jesper Ratzer from Denmark. He is undefeated in three and a half years and can already call two World Champs Single trophies his own. Still there is one goal he hasn’t reached and will try to do so this year: win all four World Champs titles in the same year. After winning the team title with the Danish team for the first time and the doubles and mixed title in Copenhagen this summer, the single title is the last one missing to win the “Grand Slam”.
Of course 2nd, 3rd and 4th seeded Kasper Jønsson (Denmark), Lukas Windischberger (Austria) and Michi Dickert(Austria) as well as all other players in the draw will try to give him a hard time.

Women A

The ladies draw will generate a new World Champion in any case as defending champion Zuzana Kubanova will not be there. Favourite for the title is world number 1, Christine Seehofer from Austria. Former world number 1 and World Champion from 2012 and 2013, Nathalie Vogel (Germany) is making her international comeback after a baby break and will be dangerous for the title. 2nd seeded Amke Fischer (Germany) is favourite to reach the final from the bottom half of the draw.

Men B, C, D,E, Women B

A competitive 32-draw in Men B let first seeded Arturs Zaicevs from Latvia dream of the top of the podium as well as Jo Shelley in the Womens B, which is also a very healthy sized draw with 29 players. Arturs is followed by Austrian Roland Pichler and Richard Middleton from Great Britain and Jo by Czech Zuzana Severinová and Anita Voelkl from Germany.

The biggest draw with 80 players is the Men C draw lead by Christian Ried, one of the three top seeds from the hosting country Germany. The top seeded in the Men D draw is Patrick Bürgi from Switzerland. Men E for the first timers is of course without seeded players.

Juniors and Seniors

In three Junior classes, Hungarian Botond Francia is fighting for the gold medal in U13, Emanuel Schöpf from Austria in U21 and Christine Seehofer in Girls U21 for the last time.

The Seniors are looking for their champion in six men classes and three women classes. In the +40 categories the Brits Duncan Stahl and Jo Shelley lead the draws as first seeds. The top seeds of the +45 categories are Barbara Capper from Great Britain and Levente Nandori from Hungary who will both try to defend their titles. Another player on the way to defend her title is Lilian Druve in the +50 where on the men’s side we have the second German top seeded player in Thomas Knaack. To fulfill the seeds of the hostcountry Joachim Gersdorf is leading the +55 draw. The top seeds of the oldest guys on court are Graham King (Switzerland) in +60 and Timo Räisänen (Finland) in +65.

FIR General Secretary

Weigl comes back as Austrian President

Marcel Weigl: “Racketlon helps make this world a better place”

Nearly a year ago I handed over my FIR presidency, a few months later I laid down my duties as general secretary too. Since then I always had in mind to write a short paragraph thanking my companions over the last ten years and wishing my successors good luck, but I never did it. One of the reasons was probably, because I was not sure what role in Racketlon I would take in the future. Since a couple of weeks it is clear, I have decided to comeback as president of the RFARacketlonFederation of Austria and establish my country as a role model of Racketlondevelopment in the world. My national goal stays the same as was my international: bringing together people with different religions, languages and skin color through sport, is my contribution to make this world a better place to live on.

Special thanks to…..

Before I talk about the future I will now express my special thanks to Lennart Eklundh, who was at my side as vice-president for the whole period of 10 years and supported all my decisions, similar to Poku Salo. Secondly, it was Graham King whom I thank for taking the initiative and keeping FIR alive in the last year, when I was close to throwing everything down. Last but not least I thank my biggest critic Keith Lesser for opening my eyes and helping me to accept that some things will never become reality and that there will always be someone who knows a better way. Nevertheless, I would still take every single decision of my presidency the same way again.

Media, sponsorship and website with high priority

In the end I will not forget to thank Kresten Hougaard who choose to take over as president and wish his team and him that they can continue to work on the base I built up. There is a lot to do in the three-year period and one year is already over. The Council has been enlarged to 13 people and especially the areas concerning media and social media were put on the high priority agenda starting with a new website and a corporate identity. After the EU project was rejected, it will be even more important to find sponsors to be able to hold the budget. Although time is running fast the new team has my full trust and support and together with Radu Ionescu my contribution will be to continue working on the EU project.

Comeback as Austrian president

Austrias Racketlon president Martin Schifko (see pic left) did not stand for re-election at the AGM a couple of weeks ago, so I had the choice to quit Racketlon completely or to take care of my baby properly again. I could not resist and chose to take over Austria again to establish my country as a role model for Racketlon development in the world, where Michael Ebert (see pic right) an international expert of ITF – International Tennis Federation junior development has joined me in the RFA Council. We have views of building up an international Racketlon College and Training Centre at the venue of City and Country Club www.cityandcountry.at, where the next European Championships will be held from 25th of August to 2nd  September 2017 and I have rented a premise at the venue for my www.racketlonshop.at. Finally and I need to finish my master thesis on “Racketlon in the EU” until the end of the year and that is why I have the decided for the first time after 10 years to NOT travel to the world championships. I wish everyone good luck and a good time!

Duyck beats the Brits

he second Antwerp Open (5th -6th of November) can go into the history books as successful challenger tournament with 100 players playing over 250 matches. The level of play was high, the schedule was smooth and we saw perfect sportsmanship of all participants in each events. All results are now online on fir.tournamentsoftware.com

The home crowd was happy to witness a second victory of their hero Peter Duyck in Men A. As third seed he had 4 British players to beat to defend his title. After two comfortable wins against Boden and Bishop on Saturday, the matches became tight on Sunday. Peter beat Duncan Stahl in the semifinal and made it to the dream final: the top seeded against the home favorite. Peter thrived on the support from the large home crowd to beat Dan Busby by just 2 points.

In the Womens A event Anastasiya Bruzgina from Germany was the surprise winner after beating Dutch Kirsten Kaptein and Eefje Henkelman and a super tight 1-point victory over defending champion Lieselot De Bleeckere by beating her in Tennis 21:2 (credit: Hans Abbeloos).

In the Mens doubles the podium was an all British one with Stahl/Busby standing on the top. In the Womens double Eefje Henkelman and Lieselot De Bleeckere could take the gold medal as well as Jolien Naessens and Pieter De Bleeckere in the Mixed.

We hope to see all of you again next year!
